About the Artist

Tim Williams - Biography

Tim's artist story

A late life artist...,.,

A retired social worker, I discovered pastel painting in 2012 at age 69.   I had messed around a little with acrylics in the distant past and taken some drawing classes here and there, but pretty much was new to being an artist.   Then I took a soft pastels class with a wonderful pastelist named  Herb Slapo and I was hooked.   I loved the rich, pure colors of pastels and the softness.   When Herb retired from teaching I found another wonderful teacher and mentor, Kim Werfel, and studied with her for several years.
My learning continues with another terrific teacher, Alain Picard.  In May of 2020 I signed up for a course on  The Painterly Landscape with him.   The following month Alain established an online community of pastel artists, the Cultivate Community.   As a member I am learning from him to develop a more painterly style - looser, more expressive and softer-edged - supported by a world-wide community of fellow artists.
I work mostly from photographs I have taken in North Carolina, Hawaii, Canada, France, Italy and England over the past few years.   There are even a couple from photos I took back in the late sixties in Algeria, where I did a Peace Corps-type stint.   A few exceptions where I didn't work from my own photo are noted in my portfolio.

I grew up in England, came to the Unted States in 1969.   I live in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
